Canon rr2200 2800 3300 Common Faults

Hi all,

Remember I said this is not just about me. We've got to share knowledge and help others. To this end, I've tried to list a few common technical problems that you may call out an engineer for but may not need to now. I'll add one per post to give others a chance to add their own experiences too.

Models Canon ir2200 ir2800 ir3300 (but can relate to other copiers too!)


1. When feeding A4 Documents through the automatic document feeder, the document stops and display asks for A3 paper to be installed.

This problem is normally to do with one of the document sensors just to the right of your a4 document when it is placed on the feeder - there are 3 in total. For A4 the machine uses only 1.

Causes and solutions

- either you've placed some other documents beside your original on the doc tray for convenience. These documents are covering the A3 document sensor so the machine thinks that you want to feed an A3 document - remove those documents (not being rude)

- The sensor flag that sits proud of the document tray waiting to be covered by a document (usually A3 or your incorrectly placed doc we mentioned above) is not raised high enough so the optical sensor beneath the covers is actuated as if there was an A3 document. This is usually caused by what's known as a 'lazy sensor'. The shaft that this sensor pivots on can become dry or dirty, or both. Just get a can of WD40, lubricating spray oil of some kind with a straw for precision - then aim the spray at the base of the sensor arm - you can see where it sits by looking under it from the left. Spray away for a second or two and move the sensor arm. This will lubricate the arm shaft enough to allow the sensor arm to return to it's home position after it has been actuated (pressed).

Prevent costly call out charges

In these hard times where money rarely rolls up on our drive way, businesses and households alike have had to find inventive ways to cut the costs and limit uneccessary extravagancies. Now, although the internet and emails have been able to store documents of all types, there is still a need and demand for the paper document and therefore, the printer and or copier machine! Now, even though printer and copier prices have been rapidly dropping over the last few years the costs for servicing them have not. Particularly if you do not have a maintenance contract. The market for printers and photocopiers has steadily been dominated by the likes of Canon and HP and Canon in particular have won reviews for price, quality and overall cost of ownership (read reviews).

Many households and even businesses are not covered by any form of maintenance contract on their printers or copiers, just waiting for them to brake down before either replacing them or, calling out a engineer for a possible $100 a pop! Now, unlike your standard household electronics such as tv's, stereo systems or fridges, printers and copiers need some form of maintenance and cleaning to prolong their life and possibly save you hundreds or thousands of pounds on maintenance costs or the cost of a new machine.

The good thing is, that just like changing your own engine oil or brake pads on your car, there is nothing stopping you from doing the same level of repair on your printer/copier. Of course, there are certain things best left to the professionals, but with the right hands-on approach and a little knowledge, you can quite easily solve many of the regular types of issues that crop up when using printers and copiers. Now, the internet being what it is today, no more is knowledge just in the hands of the priviledged. I speak as a trained copier and printer engineer for over 23 years, when I tell you that at least 50% of service calls could have been solved by the customer themselves if they had been shown or had access to certain technical information.
